Water damage is the most common and most expensive home insurance claim in the US — and most of it happens from leaks that were slow, hidden, and completely preventable. A smart water shut-off valve monitors your home’s water use around the clock, alerts you the moment something unusual happens, and lets you shut off the water remotely from your phone. MQ Plumbing installs smart shut-off systems for homeowners across Mint Hill, Charlotte, and the surrounding metro. One visit, one installation — and you have visibility into your home’s water system wherever you are.

How Smart Water Shut-Off Works

A smart shut-off valve is installed on your main water line where it enters the house. It does three things continuously:

It monitors flow.

The system tracks your home's water usage patterns over time and learns what's normal — how much water a shower uses, how long the dishwasher runs, what your typical overnight baseline looks like.

It detects anomalies.

When flow doesn't match the expected pattern — a pipe that's leaking slowly behind a wall, a toilet that's running continuously, a hose bib left open — the system flags it and sends an alert to your phone.

It shuts off automatically or on command.

When a leak is detected, the system can shut off the main water supply automatically, or you can trigger it manually from the app anywhere in the world. A burst pipe while you're traveling doesn't have to become a gutted house.

Who Benefits Most

Frequent travelers — If you’re away from home regularly, a burst pipe or slow leak can cause weeks of water damage before anyone notices. Remote shut-off gives you control from wherever you are.

Vacation and second home owners — The same risk at higher stakes. Smart monitoring with automatic shut-off is the most cost-effective protection available for a property you’re not in every day.

Homeowners with older plumbing — Aging supply lines, corroded fittings, and worn valves are higher-risk. A smart system catches the slow failures before they become catastrophic ones.

Anyone who’s already had a water damage claim — Insurance premiums go up after a claim. Some carriers offer discounts for smart water monitoring systems. One conversation with your insurance agent may pay for the installation.

New homeowners — You don’t yet know what you have. A monitoring system tells you your actual water usage patterns and flags anything unusual from day one.

Protect Your Home Before a Leak Finds It

Smart water monitoring is the most effective leak prevention available for a residential home. One installation, lifetime visibility.

What We Install

We install leading smart water shut-off systems including Moen Flo and Phyn Plus — both of which provide whole-home monitoring, leak detection, and remote shut-off through a smartphone app.

Moen Flo — Installs on the main line, monitors flow rate and pressure, detects leaks as small as a dripping faucet, and runs an automatic daily health check that pressurizes the system and looks for drops. Works with Alexa and Google Home.

Phyn Plus — Similar whole-home monitoring with leak detection and automatic shut-off. Particularly strong at identifying fixture-specific usage — it can distinguish between a running toilet and a running faucet based on flow signature alone.

Both systems require professional installation on the main water line. We handle the installation, walk you through the app setup, and make sure the system is configured correctly for your home’s baseline before we leave.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will a smart shut-off valve work with my existing plumbing?
In most cases, yes. Smart shut-off valves install on the main supply line and work with copper, PVC, and PEX systems. We assess your main line configuration during the installation visit to confirm compatibility and identify the best location.
Can the system shut off water automatically, or do I have to do it manually?
Both. You can set the system to shut off automatically when it detects a leak that meets a certain threshold, or you can receive an alert and shut off manually from the app. Most homeowners use a combination — automatic shut-off for after-hours and travel, manual control during normal use.
Will my insurance company give me a discount for installing one?
Many will. Specific discounts vary by carrier and policy. We recommend calling your insurance company before installation — some will ask for documentation of the installation, which we can provide.
How long does installation take?
Typically two to three hours. We shut off the main water supply, cut in the valve at the appropriate location on the main line, restore water, and run the initial system setup with you before leaving.
